I decided it couldn’t hurt to try the easy way and if it didn’t work try to solve the problem(s) from there. I realized I was grossly over-thinking this whole process.

I also had to worry about how I was going to install this blindly as the Aspire EasyStore has no VGA output. Then I could just put it in my safe and be fine doing a reformat and reinstall of WHS 2011. My initial thought was to take my new drive, plug it in and transfer all the data to it. Once I had my drive I thought I was ready to go, but first I had to elaborately plan this whole process because no doubt it was going to be a *****. A couple weeks later I found a good deal on a Western Digital Green and snagged it up (yea…I’m a deal junkie ). With an external I can place the drive in our fireproof safe and keep this important information truly secure. This is a need anyway, as now my data is toast if some horrible event destroys my home server anyway. With this in mind it was an easy choice to wait until I picked up another 2 TB drive to serve as a backup…external to the home server. This is my family’s precious memories and terabytes of very important information and it also isn’t “just an install”. This isn’t like my desktop machine that I can mess around with and if something goes awry I just start over. With the product in-hand I was ready to upgrade…or was I? I wasn’t about to just reformat my home server and install the new OS. Getting the new OS for $50 was too good to pass up. However, a couple months later (surprisingly very soon for such a new Microsoft product) the price of WHS 2011 dropped and our friends at Newegg had and an additional $10 off with a promo code. Therefore, I put it off come the official release of 2011.

I basically knew that any sort of upgrade was going to be a complicated task that would eat into my already busy schedule. Getting my server set up was a challenge to say the least as I previously described here. So, being convinced that I was going to upgrade I was also presented with a lot of anxiety about the process. WGS has a handy worksheet to help you determine if an upgrade is viable in your situation. While the age of that product isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it’s very stable and has a proven record operating home servers, there are many new features that I wanted for my server that just weren’t possible with the older version.

This new Windows Home Server product is based on the Server 2008 R2 SP1 framework and therefore a much needed update from the older 2003 framework of WHS v1. I’ve been contemplating an upgrade to my home server to the newest OS, WHS 2011.
